Ooh. Love triangle you say. Yum yum. That is always a base for a good story. Rie might just be the emotionally unstable girl but she is letting it all out in the anime she voices for. God knows what will happen to her husband after she retires.

I went ahead and spoiled myself and read the first two light novels so there will be no love triangle like you described between the two friends (Taiga and Minorin). However, they will be introducing a new girl who will fit that bill. You see her in both the beginning and ending credits.

I’ll say this now: I.do.not.like.her!

Which is to be expected since she is not going to be a very likable character. She’s the “cynical brat” type you mentioned earlier in your post.

However, the one thing that does bother me about Toradora the anime is that Kugimiya Rei’s standard-issue tsundere character is slowly eclipsing the tsundere character that was in the original novels. I don’t like it when Taiga starts physically assaulting Ryuuji. She is still as acerbic in the novels and manga as she is in the show but beatings, eye-poking and kicks seem so out of character.

I put that down to Kugimiya Rei channeling her other violent tsuntsun character Louis from Zero no Tsukaima.

Perhaps. Though you’re right. A yandere Minorin after some near-romance with her will really up the excitement levels of this anime. If that ever happens, Taiga would have to become a ‘jama’ character between her and Ryuuji, and we get into a nice big triangular plot with lots of ‘watashi wa makenai!’ and ‘jama shinaide!’ moments with Minorin and Taiga. Aaargh! What am I talking about!?

I agree that Minorin is a girl that is a little different than the emo-zombies, the bitchirin and the tsuntsuns but all that genki energy and enthusiasm can be…a sympton of something darker?

Maybe I’m reading more into the character than I should be but I am getting a serious Kafuka Fura from Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei vibe and that ain’t good.

If Toradora were a little more serious I’d peg Minorin as a potential yandere in the making. However, since she doesn’t have a boyfriend, and Ryuuji doesn’t stand a chance with this girl with Taiga around, I guess we’ll never know.
