I saw the penguin and I was like wtf? I mean, it appeared multiple times. It seems to be a magical item of somekind that gives Nodoka super mahjong powers to pwn all the schools in Japan. And… are those penguins even allowed in the tourney!?

Well, it’s something that makes Nodoka feel comfortable when playing, since she’s at her best behind her computer without the added affect of playing with others. You saw how she got flustered and worried when playing with Saki at the start. Hisa suggested bringing something from her home to help her calm down, and it looks like she’s playing the way she’s played on-line because of that.
